Why Your Tomato Plants Stopped Producing in August (And How to Get a Second Harvest)

Here’s something that catches nearly every gardener off guard: a tomato plant can be five feet tall, deep green, covered in flowers — and still refuse to give you a single new tomato.

It happens almost every August. In July the plants were producing faster than you could pick. Then, sometime in the last few weeks, the flowers started turning yellow at the base and dropping off the stem before anything formed behind them. No holes chewed in the leaves. No spots. No wilting. Just a healthy-looking plant that has quietly gone on strike.

If that sounds like your garden right now, the good news is that this is almost never a disease, and it’s almost never something you did wrong. It’s a temperature problem — and depending on where you live, there’s still time to fix it and get a real second harvest before the first frost.

Let’s go through what’s actually happening inside the plant, and then exactly what to do about it.

The Real Reason Tomato Plants Stop Producing in Heat

Tomatoes are self-pollinating. Each flower contains both male and female parts, and pollen simply has to fall from one to the other — usually helped along by a bit of wind or the vibration of a passing bumblebee.

That whole system depends on pollen behaving itself. And tomato pollen has a narrow comfort zone:

  • Daytime highs above roughly 90°F (32°C) begin to damage pollen viability.
  • Nighttime lows that stay above roughly 75°F (24°C) are the bigger culprit — the plant never gets its overnight recovery period.
  • Very high humidity makes pollen sticky and clumped, so it won’t shed properly.
  • Very dry, still air causes the opposite problem — pollen dries out before it can germinate.

When any of those conditions hold for several days in a row, the flower opens, fails to pollinate, and the plant simply lets it go. That yellowing joint where the flower meets the stem is called the abscission layer, and the plant forms it deliberately. It is cutting its losses.

Here’s the part that matters most for your timeline: the flowers dropping today were affected by weather from roughly two to three weeks ago. So a heat wave in late July shows up as an empty plant in mid-August. And the reverse is also true — once temperatures break, it takes another two to three weeks before you see fruit setting again. The plant isn’t dead. It’s on a delay.

Rule Out the Other Suspects First

Heat explains most August stalls, but not all of them. Run through this short list before you do anything else:

  • Too much nitrogen. If your plant is enormous, gorgeous, dark green and barely flowering, you’ve been feeding it lawn food. Nitrogen builds leaves. Phosphorus and potassium build fruit.
  • Inconsistent watering. Deep soak, then bone dry, then deep soak again is one of the fastest ways to trigger blossom drop and blossom end rot at the same time.
  • Determinate variety. Some tomatoes — most paste and canning types, like Roma — are genetically programmed to set one big crop and then stop. If yours produced heavily and then quit completely, check the seed packet or plant tag. A determinate plant that’s finished is finished, and no amount of care will restart it.
  • Crowding. Plants growing into each other trap humid air, which interferes with pollen shed and invites fungal problems.

Everything below applies to indeterminate varieties — the sprawling, keep-going-until-frost kind, which includes most cherry, beefsteak and heirloom tomatoes.

How to Restart Production: A Practical Checklist

Once the worst heat passes, these are the moves that actually make a difference. In rough order of impact:

  1. Water deeply and on a schedule. Two or three long soakings a week beats a daily splash. Water at the base in the morning, never over the leaves.
  2. Mulch heavily. Two to three inches of straw, shredded leaves or grass clippings around the base can drop soil temperature noticeably and holds moisture between waterings. This is the single cheapest fix on the list.
  3. Give temporary shade during heat waves. A length of 30–40% shade cloth on stakes over the plants during the hottest part of the afternoon protects the flowers without starving the plant of light. An old sheet on a couple of tomato stakes works fine too.
  4. Switch what you’re feeding. Move off high-nitrogen fertilizer and onto something balanced or fruit-focused. Feed every two weeks while the plant is actively flowering.
  5. Help with pollination. Mid-morning, give each flower cluster a gentle flick with your finger, or tap the stake the plant is tied to. It takes thirty seconds per plant and genuinely improves set in still or humid conditions.
  6. Prune the bottom third. Remove leaves touching the soil and any that are yellowing. Better airflow, less disease, and energy redirected upward.
  7. Keep picking. Every ripe tomato you leave on the vine signals to the plant that it’s done its job. Harvesting regularly — even picking fruit slightly under-ripe to finish on the counter — keeps it working.

Real Talk: Sometimes the Answer Is to Stop Fighting

I’ll admit I spent one whole summer babying a row of tomatoes that were never going to come back. I watered, I fed, I fussed, I read forums at eleven at night. In September I finally pulled them out and found the roots knotted into a solid mass at the bottom of a container that was two sizes too small. The heat hadn’t been the whole story, and everything I’d done had been treating the wrong problem.

So before you commit to a rescue plan, do the boring check: dig a finger four inches into the soil and see if it’s actually moist, and if it’s in a pot, tip it out far enough to look at the roots. Five minutes of looking beats three weeks of guessing.

The Frost Math That Decides Everything

This is the calculation almost nobody makes, and it’s the one that tells you whether to keep going or shift strategy.

From the moment a flower is successfully pollinated, most tomato varieties need 45 to 60 days to produce a fully ripe fruit. Cherry types are faster — sometimes 35 to 45 days.

So look up your average first frost date, then count backwards:

  • More than 60 days left? A second harvest is realistic. Work the checklist above.
  • Around 30 to 60 days? New flowers won’t finish, but existing green fruit will. Pinch off the growing tips at the top of each main stem and remove any new flower clusters. This is called topping, and it forces the plant to pour everything into the tomatoes already on the vine instead of starting projects it can’t finish.
  • Under 30 days? Stop feeding, reduce water slightly, and let the plant finish. Anything still green at frost can be picked and ripened indoors in a paper bag with a banana.

The One Tip Worth Remembering Next Year

If your tomato plants stopped producing this August, the fix for next August isn’t a product — it’s a planting date.

Set out a second, smaller batch of tomato seedlings in early July, timed so they hit their flowering stage after peak heat rather than during it. In most of the US that means a burst of fruit through September and into October, at exactly the point when your spring-planted vines are winding down. Two staggered plantings, six to eight weeks apart, will do more for your total harvest than any fertilizer on the shelf.
