A perfectly healthy arborvitae can drop a third of its foliage this month and still be completely fine. So can a white pine — in fact, a mature white pine sheds so many needles in a good September that homeowners call tree services in a panic, convinced something is killing it.
And yet: evergreens absolutely do die, and the early warning signs look almost identical from thirty feet away. So the useful question isn’t “are my evergreens turning brown?” It’s “where on the plant is the brown, and which direction is it moving?” That one distinction tells you, in about ninety seconds in your own yard, whether you’re watching a normal autumn housekeeping routine or the first stage of a plant you’re going to lose by spring.
Here’s how to read it.
Evergreen doesn’t mean every needle is forever
This is the piece almost nobody gets told. “Evergreen” means the plant never stands completely bare — not that it keeps the same needles for life. Every needle has a lifespan, and when it’s up, it goes.
Roughly, by species:
- Eastern white pine — needles last about two years. This is why white pines put on the most dramatic show of the bunch, going butter-yellow inside and raining needles for a week or two.
- Arborvitae — inner sprays of scale foliage turn tan or rusty brown and flake off, usually in the third or fourth year of growth.
- Spruce and fir — needles hang on five years or longer, so noticeable shedding is much subtler and much rarer.
- Pines generally, plus cedars and junipers — somewhere in between, usually two to four years.
The oldest needles are the ones closest to the trunk, shaded out by everything that grew after them. They stop earning their keep, the tree pulls the useful nutrients back out of them, and they let go. That’s why normal drop always appears on the inside of the plant first — and why it looks so alarming, because the brown is stacked up right in the middle where you can’t miss it.
The pattern that means “normal”
Walk up to the plant and actually look inside it, past the outer layer. Seasonal needle drop looks like this:
- The brown is interior — near the trunk and along the inner third of the branches.
- Branch tips are still green and flexible all the way around the plant.
- It’s even — top to bottom, north side and south side, roughly the same amount everywhere.
- The color is a clean yellow-to-tan, and the needles release easily when you brush them.
- It’s happening right now — mid-September through about mid-November, depending on your region.
- Everyone else’s are doing it too. Take one walk around the block. If the neighbor’s pines and the ones at the school are doing the same thing on the same week, that’s a calendar event, not a disease.
That last check is the fastest one and, honestly, the one that settles it most of the time. Fungal problems and pest damage don’t arrive on every property on the street simultaneously. Autumn does.
The pattern that means “pay attention”
Now the opposite list. Any of these is worth a closer look:
- Browning starts at the tips and moves inward. This is the single most important reversal. Normal drop moves outward-in; trouble moves tip-in.
- It’s one-sided or patchy — the south or west face is crisping while the shaded side is fine, or there’s a dead section in the middle of otherwise green growth.
- Whole branches are brown, including this year’s new growth at the ends.
- Browning from the bottom up on an arborvitae hedge, especially the plants nearest a driveway or road.
- Needles are dropping while still green. That’s never a seasonal thing.
- It happened fast — a plant that was fine in July and is half-brown in September.
- Fine webbing, or a dusty gray cast to the foliage when you tap a branch over a white sheet of paper. That’s spider mites.
Real talk: I’ve made the wrong call in both directions
The first autumn I paid attention to this, I nearly took a pruning saw to a perfectly healthy pine because the inside looked like it had been scorched. A neighbor stopped me — she’d been gardening for forty years — and told me to come back in three weeks. By mid-October the brown needles had all dropped, the tree looked immaculate, and I felt like an idiot.
Then a couple of years later I did the opposite: I decided the browning on one end of an arborvitae hedge was “just the fall thing,” ignored it, and lost two plants. That one was tip-in, one-sided, and on the side nearest the pavement. Every signal was there. I just wanted it to be normal, so I read it as normal.
The honest lesson is that the pattern tells you the truth and your hopes don’t. Spend the ninety seconds and actually look at the direction the brown is traveling.
What actually kills evergreens — and it usually starts now
When an evergreen dies over winter, the damage was almost always done in autumn. Four causes account for most of it:
1. Going into winter thirsty. Evergreens keep losing moisture through their foliage all winter long, but once the ground is frozen the roots can’t replace it. A plant that entered winter with dry roots has no reserve, and it browns in February and March while nobody’s watching.
2. Winter burn. Sun and wind on a cold, bright day pull water out of the foliage faster than frozen roots can resupply it. Classic signature: the south, southwest, or windward side turns bronze or straw-colored while the sheltered side stays green.
3. Buried root flares and mulch piled against the trunk. A plant set too deep, or ringed with a volcano of mulch, slowly suffocates and rots at the base. The decline is gradual enough that it rarely gets blamed on the real cause.
4. Road salt and de-icer spray. The reason arborvitae hedges so often die from the driveway end inward. Salt-laden slush thrown by tires is brutal on foliage and soil alike.
Five things worth doing in the next three weeks
- Water deeply, and keep going until the ground freezes. This is the highest-value thing on the list by a wide margin. A long, slow soak at the base every week or two in dry fall weather — not a quick sprinkle — is what carries an evergreen through winter.
- Mulch two to three inches deep, and keep it off the trunk. Leave a few inches of bare ground right at the base. Mulch insulates the soil and slows freezing; mulch against bark just holds moisture where it causes rot.
- Don’t fertilize and don’t prune now. Both push soft new growth that won’t harden off before the first hard freeze — which means you’d be manufacturing the exact brown tips you’re trying to avoid.
- Hose the foliage down if you suspect mites. A firm spray of water, inside and out, a few times over a couple of weeks knocks populations down considerably without reaching for anything stronger.
- Plan a burlap screen for anything young and exposed — first-year plants, or a hedge facing an open field or a road. A screen on the windward side, not wrapped tight around the plant, prevents most winter burn. Put it up after the first hard freeze, not now.
The one test to do before you do anything else
Before you water, before you worry, push a long screwdriver into the soil under the drip line of the plant — the outer edge of the branches, not against the trunk. If it slides in six or eight inches with steady pressure, the soil has moisture. If it stops short or fights you the whole way, that root zone is dry, and the plant is heading into winter with nothing in the tank.
That’s a ten-second check, it costs nothing, and it catches the number one cause of evergreens turning brown for real — the kind that doesn’t grow back in spring. Do it this weekend, on every evergreen you’d be sad to lose. Then let the inside needles fall where they may.
