Here’s the part almost nobody sees coming: when an outdoor faucet freezes, the crack usually isn’t at the faucet. It’s in the copper pipe a foot or two inside the wall — behind the drywall, above a finished basement ceiling, somewhere you can’t look at. And because that pipe is frozen solid all winter, the ice plugs its own leak. Everything seems fine.
Then comes the first warm Saturday in April. You go out to wash the car, turn the handle, and hear water running somewhere it shouldn’t be. By the time you find the shutoff, it’s been spraying into insulation for four minutes.
That’s the whole reason to learn how to winterize an outdoor faucet — it’s a ten-minute job in September or October that prevents a repair you can’t do yourself.
The garden hose is the actual villain here
Plain water expanding as it freezes isn’t usually enough to split a pipe on its own. An empty, properly draining spigot can survive a cold night just fine. The problem is the hose.
A garden hose left screwed onto the faucet holds a column of water, and it seals the faucet’s opening shut. So when that water freezes, it has nowhere to go but backward — pressure builds along the pipe running into your house until it finds the weakest point. That point is almost never the heavy brass spigot. It’s the thinner pipe behind the wall.
This is also why “but my faucet is frost-free” doesn’t get you off the hook. A frost-free sillcock is designed so the valve that actually stops the water sits 8 to 12 inches back inside the heated wall, and the pipe out to the handle drains itself by gravity. That design works beautifully — right up until a hose is attached and the water can’t drain out. Then the frost-free faucet is just a regular faucet with a longer, colder pipe.
The ten-minute job, step by step
Do this before your first hard freeze, not after. A single night in the 20s is enough.
- Unscrew every hose. All of them — the one on the front spigot you forgot about, the soaker hose in the vegetable bed, the splitter on the side of the garage.
- Drain each hose fully. Walk it out flat, lift one end and let it empty, then coil it. Water left inside can freeze and split the hose from the inside, which is how a perfectly good hose develops a mystery pinhole spray next May.
- Store hoses off the ground — hung in a garage or shed, or at least coiled on a wall hook. Left in a pile on cold concrete, they stiffen, crack at the bends, and become a home for mice.
- Find the indoor shutoff valve for that spigot and close it. In most houses it’s on the pipe that runs toward the exterior wall — check the basement ceiling, a crawlspace, or the back of a utility closet.
- Go back outside and open the faucet all the way. Leave it open for a minute so the trapped water between the shutoff and the spigot drains out. This is the step people skip, and it’s the one that matters.
- Look for a small bleeder cap on the shutoff valve — a little nut or screw on the side. If you have one, put a cup under it and loosen it to let the last of the water out, then snug it back up.
- Close the outdoor faucet once it stops dripping, so nothing blows in or nests in it.
If your house doesn’t have a dedicated indoor shutoff and the spigot is a frost-free model, you’re still mostly covered — but only if the hose is off and the faucet is pitched slightly downward so it drains. Open the handle, listen for it to empty, then close it.
Real talk: I learned this one the expensive way
The year I finally did this properly, it was because of a neighbor. He’d left a hose on a back spigot he never used — the kind of faucet behind a shrub that you genuinely forget exists. The split happened somewhere above his finished basement ceiling, and he didn’t find it until he turned the water on in spring and heard it hitting the ceiling tiles from the inside.
The repair itself wasn’t the painful part. Cutting into the ceiling to reach the pipe, and then dealing with the drywall and insulation afterward, was. Two days of work and a few hundred dollars in materials and a plumber’s time, because of a $9 hose nobody ever used.
Now I do a lap around the house every fall specifically hunting for forgotten spigots. There’s usually one.
The rest of the outdoor water list
While you’re out there, the same freeze logic applies to everything else holding water:
- Drip irrigation and soaker lines — disconnect from the timer, open the end caps, and let them drain downhill. Bring battery timers indoors; the batteries and the plastic housing both hate freezing.
- In-ground sprinkler systems — in cold regions these usually need to be blown out with compressed air, which is worth having done properly. Guessing at PSI can damage the heads.
- Rain barrels — drain them and either flip them upside down or leave the spigot open. A full barrel of ice will crack the plastic at the seams.
- Pressure washers — run the pump dry or use pump antifreeze. A cracked pump costs more than the rest of this list combined.
- Pond and fountain pumps — small fountains should be drained and stored. Pond pumps depend on depth and whether you’re keeping a hole in the ice; check what your setup calls for.
- Outdoor kitchen or bar sinks — these have their own supply lines and traps, and they’re the most commonly forgotten of all.
How to tell if you already have a problem
If you’re reading this after a freeze already hit, don’t turn the outdoor faucet on and walk away. Have someone stand at the spigot while another person watches the pipe indoors, then open the handle slowly. Two warning signs: water comes out at a noticeably weaker flow than usual, or you hear running water when the faucet is shut off. Either one means close the indoor shutoff and call a plumber before you use that line again.
And if a pipe is frozen but hasn’t burst yet, never use an open flame on it. Gentle heat from a hair dryer or a space heater in the room, working from the faucet end backward, is the safe approach.
One thing to do before you go back inside
Here’s the tip that pays off the most, and it takes thirty seconds: once you’ve found the indoor shutoff valve for each outdoor faucet, label it. A strip of masking tape and a marker — “front spigot,” “back hose bib” — tied or stuck right on the valve.
The reason isn’t tidiness. It’s that the moment you actually need that valve is the moment water is spraying somewhere and you have about ninety seconds of clear thinking available. Nobody traces pipes calmly in that state. Future you, standing in a basement in April with water coming through the ceiling, will find that piece of tape and know exactly which handle to turn.
Do the hoses this weekend, label the valves while you’re down there, and the first frost becomes a non-event.
