Here’s something that surprises most people: an air conditioner in good working order is supposed to run for long stretches. A unit that clicks on, blasts cold for six minutes, and shuts off again is often the one with a problem. So the fact that yours has been humming since breakfast isn’t automatically a repair bill.
What is a problem is when it runs all day and the house still feels heavy and damp — when you walk in from the yard and think, “why is it 78 in here when the thermostat says 72?” That gap between what the thermostat claims and what your skin feels is the real story of late August. And in most houses, three or four of the causes cost nothing at all to fix.
Let’s go through what’s actually happening, starting with the one nobody wants to hear.
Late August is the hardest month of the year for your AC
Your air conditioner has been running more or less nonstop since June. Filters are loaded. The outdoor coil has been collecting cottonwood, grass clippings, and dust for eleven weeks. The refrigerant is doing the same work it did in May, but now it’s fighting warmer nights.
That last part matters more than people realize. In June, a 90-degree afternoon cools off to 62 overnight and your house gets a free reset. By late August, the ground and the walls of your home have absorbed an entire summer of heat, and the overnight low might only be 74. Your AC never gets its head start. It wakes up already behind, and it spends the whole day trying to catch up.
So a system that seemed fine in June can feel useless in August without anything actually breaking. It’s not that the unit got worse — the job got harder.
The five-minute check that fixes it more often than anything else
Go look at your filter. Not “I think I changed it in spring” — go pull it out and hold it up to a window.
If you can’t see light clearly through it, your air conditioner is trying to breathe through a pillow. A clogged filter restricts airflow across the indoor coil, which means less air gets cooled, which means the system runs longer to reach the same temperature. In bad cases the coil gets so cold it ices over, and then you get almost no airflow at all — which people usually misread as “low on freon.”
A few things worth knowing:
- Summer filters clog faster. A filter rated for 90 days is rated for average use. Running 18 hours a day in August isn’t average.
- Thicker isn’t always better. Very dense HEPA-style filters can restrict airflow in older systems that weren’t designed for them. A mid-range pleated filter usually cools better than the most expensive one on the shelf.
- Pets change the math. Two shedding dogs will turn a fresh filter gray in about five weeks.
Real talk: I ignored this for a whole summer once, convinced my unit was dying and mentally budgeting for a replacement. The filter was so packed it held its shape when I set it down on the floor. New filter, and by that evening the house was cold again. It cost about the price of a sandwich.
Go outside and look at the other half of your system
The metal box sitting beside your house is where the heat from inside your home actually gets dumped into the outdoor air. If it can’t breathe, nothing else works.
Walk out and check for:
- Plants crowding it. That hydrangea you let sprawl needs about two feet of clearance on all sides. Shrubs pressed against the fins force the unit to re-inhale its own hot exhaust.
- A dirty coil. Look at the fins wrapping the outside of the unit. If they’re carpeted with fuzz, grass, and dust, that’s insulation on a machine whose whole job is releasing heat.
- Debris on top. Leaves, a stray toy, a bag of mulch someone parked there in July. The fan pulls air up and out through the top.
You can rinse the outdoor coil yourself with a garden hose, gently, from the inside out if you can reach — and with the power to the unit switched off at the breaker first. Low pressure only. A pressure washer will flatten those fins permanently, and bent fins block airflow worse than the dirt did.
The problem might not be the AC at all
Here’s where the gap between the thermostat and your comfort usually comes from. Cool air is only half of comfort. Dry air is the other half, and humidity is what makes 72 degrees feel like 78.
Watch for these quiet leaks in your home’s ability to hold cool, dry air:
- Blocked or closed vents. Closing vents in unused rooms doesn’t save money on most systems — it raises duct pressure and hurts airflow everywhere. Check that furniture and rugs aren’t sitting on floor registers.
- The bathroom fan you never run. A single long shower can dump a startling amount of moisture into the house. Run the fan during the shower and for fifteen minutes after.
- West-facing windows. Between about 3 and 7 p.m. these act like small heaters. Closing those blinds before the sun hits them, not after, makes a measurable difference.
- Attic heat. If your upstairs is dramatically hotter than downstairs, the ductwork running through a 140-degree attic is losing cool air before it ever reaches a room. That’s an insulation and sealing issue, not an AC issue.
When it’s genuinely time to call someone
Some symptoms aren’t a maintenance problem, and continuing to run the system can turn a moderate repair into a replacement. Shut it off and get a professional out if you notice:
- Ice on the refrigerant line or the indoor coil that returns after you’ve changed the filter
- Air coming out of the vents that isn’t cold at all, even after the system has run for an hour
- A grinding, screeching, or rhythmic clicking sound from the outdoor unit
- The breaker tripping repeatedly
- Water pooling around the indoor unit — a clogged condensate drain can quietly ruin a ceiling or a floor
Also worth knowing: late August into September is often an easier time to book an HVAC visit than the first heat wave of July, when every technician in the county is booked three weeks out.
The one thing to do tonight
If you only do a single thing after reading this, do this one: set your thermostat fan from AUTO to ON for an hour this evening, then set it back to AUTO and leave it there.
That hour lets you feel the difference. On ON, air circulates constantly and rooms even out, but moisture that condensed on the coil gets blown right back into your house — which is exactly why an air conditioner that runs all day on the ON setting can leave a home feeling clammy despite a low thermostat reading. AUTO lets that water drain away instead. Most people who complain their house feels muggy at 72 degrees are running the fan on ON without realizing a previous setting, a guest, or a power outage left it there.
Fresh filter, clear outdoor unit, fan on AUTO, blinds closed before the afternoon sun. Four things, no money, one evening. If the house still can’t hold a temperature after that, then you’ve genuinely learned something worth paying a professional to look at.
